There are several times during the year which the Elephant Seals visit the sandy yet rocky beaches of Central California near San Simeon. One of those is late spring and early summer for “molting”. Like a snake, molting. Where they shed their old skin and wait for the new to finish up. Apparently this necessitates a lot of laying around…
